Types of domain name extensions in the world

We should know about different types of domain name extensions. Now, there are hundreds of domain name extensions in the world. There are mainly 3 types of domain name categories:

1. Top Level Domains (TLDs)
2. Country Code Top Level Domains (CCTLDs)
3. New Generic Top Level Domains (GTLDs)

1. Top Level Domains (TLDs)

Most of the TLDs are intended for broad used worldwide. Most commonly used TLDs are below:

• .com (commercial - an open TLD and anyone can register)
• .net (network - any one can register)
• .info (information - any person or entity can register)
• .org (organization - anyone can register)
• .mobi (mobile devices - must be used for mobile compatible sites, anyone can register)
• .biz (business - open TLD, anyone can register)
• .tel (internet communication services- anyone can register)
• .name (individuals- open to individuals)
• .jobs (companies - companies can register)

 Also some other TLDs can use only with some restrictions from the registry. These types of TLDs are

• .edu (educational us)
• .gov (government us)
• .int (international organizations)
• .mil (to us military)
• .museum (for museums)
• .aero (air transport industry)

2. Country Code Top Level Domains (CCTLDs)

Generally used or reserved for a country or a region or a territory.
Below list shows main CCTLDs in the world:

• .ca (Canada -  registration subject to Canadian Presence)
• .cc (Cocos Islands - anyone can register)
• .co (Colombia - marketed as a global domain name, anyone can register)
• .de (Germany - German postal address for administrative contact required to register the domain)
• .eu (European Union - restricted to legal and natural persons in EU states)
• .fr (France - restricted to European Union)
• .in (India- anyone can register. note: most of the premium .in names with foreigners now!)
• .it (Italy- restricted to European Union)
• .jp (Japan - restricted to Japan)
• .my (Malaysia - restricted to individuals or companies in Malaysia)
• .ws (Samoa - marketed to be used in general websites)
• .tv (Tuvalu - any one can register, used as an abbreviation of television)
• .tw (Taiwan- anyone can register the domain)

3. New Generic Top Level Domains (New GTLDs)

The new generic top level domain program was developed to increase competition and choice in the domain name space. There are hundreds of new GTLDs are coming within next years. Some of the new GTLDs are
